Soviet Submarine Fleet 1922-1941

As a result of the global carnage, as well as an equally bloody and destructive civil war, the Russian fleet suffered huge losses. In practice, Russia was left without a fleet and lost the status of a maritime power for a long time. The Soviet Country was founded on the ruins of the empire, the leadership of which, especially after the Kronstadt uprising, deeply doubted the usefulness of the fleet for the proletariat.

In the early years of the Bolshevik rule, unfinished warships were dismantled on the stocks and already launched for scrap abroad, for example, the battleships Borodino, Kinburn and Navarin. In November 1922, insisting on reducing even without this minimized ship repair program, V. I. Lenin convinced I. V. Stalin that the fleet in its current size was too large. And the maintenance of a fleet even slightly larger for economic and political reasons is impossible.

The leadership of the Military Revolutionary Council and the People's Commissariat of Defense adhered to a similar "liquidation" point of view, considering the fleet as an expensive toy, without which you can safely do without. In their opinion, the fate of the world revolution was decided on the land fronts, where the main striking force was the cavalry of Budyonny and Primakov, who cut the road to Warsaw, Berlin and Rome. The construction of submarines has been decommissioned. The only organization capable of designing submarines — the Baltic Plant's diving division and the Mechanical Plant - was liquidated in 1924 (with the advent of the "world of violence", many other "worlds" were destroyed: science, art, economics, law, religion, philosophy and engineering were replaced by Marxism and proletarian culture).

As a result, in the 20s of the twentieth century, the Workers' and Peasants' Red Fleet was a small conglomerate of hopelessly outdated vessels based on two isolated naval theaters of military operations that did not pose a serious threat to potential adversaries.

As of January 1, 1928, as part of the Baltic Sea Navy, in addition to other ships of dubious value, there was a brigade of 9 Bars submarines. As part of the Black Sea Naval Forces, there was a separate squadron consisting of one submarine of the type "Moru" - formerly called "Nerpa", and now, in accordance with time, "Politruk", and 4 AG submarines. In December 1930, they were joined by the submarine AG-21, which rusted on the seabed before being raised and commissioned under the name "Metalist".

It is worth noting that the Walrus was designed under the direction of I. G. Bubnovo in 1909, and the Leopard model without watertight bulkheads was already outdated when it was put into operation in 1915-1916. The Golandi, known worldwide as Holland 602 or N-Class submarines, were successful and reliable submarines, but only by the standards of the First World War. It is not surprising that at the time when the AG-21 was again put into service in the United States, all six submarines of this type were sent for demolition in the United States.
